Here's the second part of guest blogger Adam Bruderer's review of our current 52 week beer club case4. After one Best Mates Brewery Vicar’s Daughter which was as sour as a Van Bommel tackle (had to get that line in!) I tried a second which was considerably better. This bottle conditioned IPA poured slightly cloudy with no head but was easily drinkable. A slightly hoppy taste made for a refreshing pint. (An acceptable 2.5/5)
5. Cotleigh Brewery Barn Ale: fine dark premier ale. Good head, rich and malty, smooth and fruity. One of the best of the batch so far, I’d look out for this one again. (A great 3.5/5)
7. Wold Top is a brewery I’ve come across before and found their beers enjoyable. And I wasn’t disappointed by the Wold Gold. Having had a very good beer in the Cotleigh Barn Ale, this was immediately surpassed by the Wold Gold. A delicious tangy blonde beer with a refreshing fruity taste. Great for a hot sunny day; it’s a pity this wasn’t one! (A highly commendable 4/5)
8. “Your beer cupboard is getting very full” says Ryn. Guess I’ll just have to drink some more beers then! Next up was the Potton Brewery Shambles. Best described as a light Friday evening session beer with some subtle undertones, detected by both me and Ryn. (2.5/5)
9. RCH Brewery, Pitchfork. This was an extremely lively RAIB. After waiting patiently for the large head to clear, this light golden bitter had a slightly sweet and citrus taste. Another good Friday evening beer. (3/5).

Here's my take on these beers. I should mention that my scores are +/- one (at least), depending on my mood, the weather, and what food they wash down.
ReplyDelete4. The 52wbc contents can vary, and I didn't receive any Vicar's Daughter. Instead I got Hydes Manchester's Finest, which isn't BC. It was a mid-brown colour, too gassy and lacking in bitterness. Overall a typical bottled beer. 2/5.
It seems that MyBreweryTap no longer sell Hydes.
5. Cotleigh Barn Owl. Dark brown, well-balanced and fruity. The best yet. 4/5.
6 (following the conventional number sequence, rather than Adam's). Wold Top Brewery, Wold Gold. Golden colour, and described as a "blonde beer" on the label. Well-balanced and good. 3/5.
7. Potton Brewery, Shambles. Mid-brown colour and more bitter than average. Good. It's no longer bottle conditioned, and doesn't claim to be. 3.5/5.
8. RCH Brewery, Pitchfork. This is bottle conditioned, and it's my recent discovery of how good these can be that has brought me back to bottled beer. I've also found that they normally improve significantly with storage, so this will stay in my cellar until probably at least the best before date of 11/11. I look forward to it.
